Hi Jackie

Welcome back to the forum!

Reading your previous posts you were hoping for treatment with the Taylor Spatial frame. Do we take it that the frame hasn't done the job required? I'm sorry you are having to ask this very difficult question but perhaps someone might have some thoughts on this. I have had RA for 23 years, and a fair bit of surgery en route, but not come across anyone needing anything quite as drastic as amputation.

Ailsa Bosworth, the CEO of NRAS, had problems last summer with an ankle replacement and infection. Whether or not someone at NRAS might have more information?

Sorry to hear things are not good at the moment.

Lyn x

Hi Jackie,

I know two people who have had below the knee operations but not related to RA, both had poor circulation and had tried all other routes.

My mother in law now deceased had both legs amputated below the knee one year apart, she coped brilliantly. She passed away in her late eighties due to another condition.

My husbands boss in his early forties married with two small children had his leg amputated below the knee last October, just six weeks later was starting to get up and about, he now has an artificial limb and is coping extremely well. He did go private as the NHS artificial limbs did not suit him and he had a special one made to measure that has made a huge difference to his life.

I really hope you get some good advice.

Hi Jackie

So sorry that you've got to face this.

Just off the top of my head, I have read on the Arthritis Care Forum, I'm not a member but it is an open forum for anyone to read, that someone on there has had similar. Don't know if it is related to RA or not. There is posts from people on there with various forms of arthritis.

Hope it helps.

Paula.

P.S. Welcome to the forum!!!!!

Thanks, paula, anne and lyn, very good of to help, yes I had a frame on for 8 mths and 4 months of I.V.antibiotics the frame came of in early december whith the bone fused o.k. but infection stoll there and by january the ankle had become unfused,so thats what the choice is now the below the knee amputation or they will try a frame again,so thats why I'm trying to get as much info as possible as you know they won't advise. Its 4 years this may since the ankle replacement and 10 lots of surgery so you can see the way I'm leaning.
Thanks again ,and I'm trying a smiley!! Jackie.

hi jaxx

I have known a few people who have had toes amputated, fingers and one lady who had her foot removed with the RA. My grandfather had one leg, above knee amputation due to blood clot (ah the joys of smoking...).

I have another friend who is a multiple amputee following menigitus.

Her name is Helen Smith and she has an assistance dog Yancey.

She leads a very dynamic life, same age as me!
